Help us help you reuse and recycle Monday through Friday, 12-2pm at Samson! 2009-2010 MIIS Net Impact Chapter Leader Highlighted on Global Stage for Sustainability Work “Achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible.” This was the lofty goal and public pledge the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) made in May 2007 when its president signed
the American College & University President’s Climate Commitment.
As a school that values global communities and sustainable development,
MIIS didn’t take its commitment lightly—yet in the months that
followed, administrators still lacked a strategy that would actually
accomplish carbon neutrality.Enter Clayton Snyder. An International Economics undergrad from UCLA, Clayton was working in commercial real estate sales when he realized that he needed to do something with a little more meaning. “I wasn’t finding the full value of my existence,” he reflects. “I was just beginning to wake up to the reality of the global environmental crisis.” After just a few months, Clayton went to work for Patagonia, a company he had grown to admire for its environmental commitment from founder Yvon Chouinard’s book Let My People Go Surfing. It was at Patagonia that Clayton became passionate about corporate social responsibility—specifically, he adds, about using “business as a tool to protect the environment.” | Net Impact is a global network of leaders who are changing the world through business.
